The Speculative Literature Foundation offers six grants that are free to apply for and are designed as ‘gateway’ grants with easy and straightforward applications that should be quick to complete. Find all six grant descriptions below and get your applications in order.

The Working Class Writers Grant 

Submissions: September 1 – September 30, 2021
Winner announced: November 15, 2021  

This grant is awarded annually to assist working class, blue-collar, poor, and homeless writers who have been historically underrepresented in speculative fiction, due to financial barriers. We are currently offering one $1000 working class grant annually, to be used as the writer determines will best assist his or her work. This year, we will accept applications September 1, 2021 through September 30 2021.

The Gulliver Travel Research Grant

Submissions:  November 1 – November 30, 2021
Winner announced: January 15, 2022

This grant is awarded annually to assist writers of speculative literature (in fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction) in their research. This year, we will accept applications November 1 through November 30, 2020. They are not currently available for academic research, though we hope to offer such funds in the future. We are currently offering one $1000 travel grant annually, to be used to cover airfare, lodging, and/or other travel expenses. Learn more here.

The A.C. Bose Grant  

Submissions: January 1 – January 31, 2022
Winner announced: May 15, 2021

The A.C. Bose Grant will annually give $1000 to a South Asian / South Asian diaspora writer developing speculative fiction. We will be accepting applications January 1 through January 31, 2022.

The Older Writers Grant  

Submissions: May 1 – May 31, 2021
Winner announced:
July 15, 2021

This grant is awarded annually to a writer who is fifty years of age or older at the time of the grant application, and is intended to assist such writers who are just starting to work at a professional level. We are currently offering one $1000 Older Writers grant annually, to be used as the writer determines will best assist his or her work. We will be accepting applications May 1 through May 31, 2021

The Diverse Writers and Diverse Worlds Grants  

Submissions: July 1 – July 31, 2021 
Winner announced: September 15, 2021

 The Diverse Writers grant for $500 is awarded annually to assist writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups, such as writers of color, women, queer writers, disabled writers, working-class writers, etc.—those whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing / publishing process. 

The Diverse Worlds grant for $500 is awarded annually to assist work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background.

This year, we will accept applications for both Diverse Writers and Diverse Worlds Grants July 1 through July 31st, 2021.
