We're thrilled to celebrate one of our talented alumni, Colleen Rosenfeld, whose short story "The Skilled Anatomist" has won the prestigious 2025 Halifax Prize from American Short Fiction.
This remarkable achievement marks Colleen's first published piece of fiction.
From Workshop to Award Winner
We are honored to have been a small part of Colleen's writing journey in 2023, when she enrolled in three of our transformative workshops at WritingWorkshops.com.
She first participated in our 6-Week Fiction Zoom Workshop: Writing the Short Story with acclaimed novelist and short story writer Madeline Stevens, where she honed her craft in the fundamentals of short fiction. She then continued her education with our Publishing in Literary Journals to Launch Your Career workshop, led by WritingWorkshops.com Executive Director Blake Kimzey, and a seminar in our Literary Agent Series with Mark Owen Gottlieb.
Judge Daniel Mason praised "The Skilled Anatomist," writing that it "takes a strange and beautiful conceit and runs with it, treading the uncanny space between the familiar and the fantastic." The story is featured in Issue 82 of American Short Fiction, cementing Colleen's place among today's most promising emerging writers.
About Colleen Rosenfeld
Based in Claremont, California, Colleen is currently working on a collection of horror stories entitled Fetal Positions. Her academic background is equally impressive: she writes literary criticism on Renaissance poetry and poetic theory for prestigious journals including Critical Inquiry, PMLA, and ELH. She's also the author of the monograph Indecorous Thinking (Fordham University Press, 2018). The success of "The Skilled Anatomist" represents an exciting expansion into fiction writing for this accomplished scholar.
