Led by Nadia Uddin, a graduate of the Yale Writers’ Workshop, and the author of the novel Edison in the Hood, Winner of the 17th Annual National Indie Excellence® Award for Science Fiction, IPPY's 2023 Silver Medal in Urban Fiction, and Slice Magazine's Bridging the Gap Award.

Every writer is told to “find your voice.” But what does that actually mean—and how do you know when you've found it? This intensive is for anyone tired of writing sentences that sound like they could belong to anyone. Your voice isn’t a brand. It’s not a gimmick. It’s the raw, specific way *only you* see the world—and the heartbeat under every sentence you write.

In this fast-paced, generative workshop, we’ll strip things back to what matters: rhythm, perspective, honesty, risk. We’ll look at writers whose voices are instantly recognizable—sharp, strange, quiet, furious—and break down how they do it. You’ll generate new work, get direct feedback, and sharpen your sense of what makes your writing *yours*.

Each student will submit a 5-page piece before class. I’ll provide a feedback letter for each, and we’ll live edit excerpts together—line by line, word by word—so you can feel the difference when your voice lands on the page.

You’ll leave with:

  • A clearer sense of what your voice sounds like—and how to own it
  • A set of short new pieces born from targeted, voice-first exercises
  • Personalized written feedback on your submission
  • Line edits, live insights, and a toolkit to keep your writing honest

This class is for writers who want to stop imitating and start risking. Fiction, memoir, and essay writers welcome. Beginners, returners, and mid-draft wanderers all have a seat.

Sample Reading List (excerpts provided):

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver — for voice with bite, breath, and soul

Notes of a Native Son by James Baldwin — for truth-telling that burns and sings

Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan — for quiet that cuts

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh — for deadpan brilliance and unapologetic edge
