Have you ever heard readers or writers refer to a piece of writing as "voicey?" If you've ever been confused about what this means or concerned about finding your own voice as a writer, this course is for you.

Voice is essential to a writer's work, not only as a way to set one's work apart from others, but to help writers effectively tell a story, market themselves and build an audience. How do you discover your own voice? How do you develop it? We'll take a look at examples of distinctive voices in contemporary fiction, examine how elements such as story structure can exhibit a writer's voice, and engage in brainstorming activities, discussion, and games to help flesh out our own unique voices.

We will read excerpts from How to Write an Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee, Less by Andrew Sean Greer, and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
